Lent Day 24: Matthew 26 (#5)

One of the twelve disciples, Judas, came. A crowd sent by the chief priests and elders of the people came with him, armed with swords and clubs. The one who was to betray him had given them a sign, saying, “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” Judas went straight to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. (Matthew 26:47-49).

◇ Judas, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples, came to the place where Jesus was praying in Gethsemane. He came to where Jesus was praying so earnestly that his sweat became like drops of blood. He did not come alone but with a crowd of people armed with swords and clubs to arrest Jesus.

Judas approached Jesus and said in a gentle voice, “Rabbi, hello” and kissed him as usual. The kiss of friendly greeting was a signal he had agreed with those who came with swords and clubs. The kiss that accompanied a smiling face and gentle words led to death. It was a signal that announced the beginning of the unbearable pain of the cross. A bright smile and a gentle voice’s kiss led to death.

There are many such false kisses in this world we live in. There are many betrayals that make us fall into hell and suffer in pain. Among brothers, friends, colleagues, even spouses.

Who can save these people like Judas (us)?

♧ God, have mercy on us! Do not let us become second or third Judases who nail Jesus to the cross again! Do not let us be those who give kisses of betrayal to our neighbors! Make us Christians who give kisses of life! Holy Spirit, lead us into truth!
