Psalm 39: God's Warm Hand
Prayer is the only option left for David in Psalm 39. Prayer is not wealth or property, but the fundamental connection between God and man. Therefore, whether one has reached the highest point in life or has fallen to the lowest, prayer is all that remains for them. The abyss of life makes us more aware that prayer is the fundamental link between God and man.
At the lowest point in his life, David longs for God's help. When a child holds their parent's hand, it's so reassuring. When a child holds their parent's hand and makes eye contact with them, it's comforting. David misses God's hand. At the end of his life, which is like a single breath, David wants to see favor in God's eyes.
Jesus said, "Even the grass that is here today and gone tomorrow, God clothes it." This was the voice of God, the hand of God, that David wanted to hear. Jesus' words are an answer to David's prayer in Psalm 39 and to all who echo his prayer. "I clothe and nourish the grass and the sparrow, which are insignificant in your sight.
If the object of David's prayer were not different from Jesus, who spoke of grass and sparrows, David's hands in Psalm 39 would not have been cold.
Reach out your hand to me, Lord, so that my hands may be warmed. Amen.
