Psalm 52. The Green Olive Tree Growing on the Land of Massacre
But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever. (Psalm 52:8)
David fled from Saul's persecution and sought help from Ahimelech, the priest of the town of Nob. Doeg reported this to Saul, and as a result, everyone in Nob, from man to beast, was slaughtered.
In the face of this massacre, David decided to trust in God. This situation was the complete opposite of an olive tree flourishing with green leaves. It was a difficult situation to acknowledge God's unfailing love. Doeg found his means of survival in Saul, while David found his in God. Who was more realistic, God or Saul?
In Psalm 52, we meet David, a champion of faith and struggle. He asks questions that only God can answer. He turns his fight into God's fight. David turns the confrontation between himself and Doeg into a confrontation between God and Doeg.. This is David's skill and strategy.
God has to answer David's questions without hesitation. At the scene of the massacre by Doeg and Saul, God must grow an olive tree with flourishing green leaves. God must prove his unfailing love not only to David but also to Doeg and Saul.
