Psalm 64: A Sincere Heart

God will destroy them because of what they said with their tongues (Psalm 64:8a)

David was cut by his enemies’ tongues and hit by arrows shot by their tongues. David’s tongue could not defeat them. His tongue was dull and not sharp. If the situation was a dispute between David and them, the only argument he could present was his ‘sincere heart’. So David claimed that those who have a sincere heart will praise God. The God of his enemies did not know their thoughts, but David’s God discerned the purity and sincerity of his heart. In Matthew 5, Jesus also proclaimed, ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.’ This means that those who have a pure heart do not see God because their eyes are bright, but because God sees those who have a righteous heart. That is why such people can find ‘favor’ in God’s eyes like Noah (Genesis 6:8).
