1 Corinthians 15: God Who Gives Us the Victory
Verse 19: If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
◇ Paul talks at length about the resurrection in chapter 15. What Paul wants to say is simple.
"There is a resurrection of the dead, so we too will be raised. Therefore, do your best in the work of the Lord!"
Our life may be difficult now, but it is not limited to this world. There is a resurrection after death, and a glorious life awaits us with Christ, who has risen first.
Verse 19 is likely a deeply held belief and hope in Paul's heart. A promising young Jew, he abandoned all worldly riches and chose the path of suffering, believing in Jesus, who was crucified, as the Christ and Savior. He overcame countless moments of suffering, not only physical but also mental pain.
What if there were no resurrection for Paul, no glorious times with Christ? He might think that he would be the most pitiful person in the world. But because there is a resurrection and glory with Christ, Paul believes his life, filled with suffering, is a life of grace and strives even harder for God's work. He also comforts and encourages those who follow Christ and suffer like him.
Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain (verses 57-58).
♧ Lord, help me to endure and overcome the hardships for You today with joy and hope! Let me give thanks to the God who gives us victory! Holy Spirit, lead us in truth!
