2 Corinthians 8: In simplicity, sincerity, and purity

Verse 2:

Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.

◇ Paul is praising the service of the Macedonian brothers and sisters. Despite trials and difficulties, they actively participated in fundraising for the Jerusalem congregation, who were in a difficult situation (famine). Paul praises their active service for their siblings in Christ.

The source of such active service by the Macedonians is the grace of salvation they received from God (verse 1). It is a response to the grace received freely through Jesus Christ, despite being unworthy of salvation. Their donations, which exceeded their circumstances, came from gratitude for this grace.

The Macedonian brothers and sisters show us how we should be after receiving the grace of salvation. It is not the job of those who have received grace to ignore those who suffer because of our circumstances.

The Greek word "haplotes" translated as generosity means "simplicity, sincerity, purity". It reminds us that the heart of the giver should be simple, sincere, and pure.

What is the motivation behind your donations? Is it because you can't avoid it for the sake of face? To show off? Reluctantly out of obligation? Remember the Macedonian brothers and sisters who gave generously out of gratitude for the grace of salvation every time you donate. Think of God's grace, simply, sincerely, and purely.

♧ God, please always remind us of your grace of salvation! Let us speak and act with a heart of gratitude for your grace, in simplicity, sincerity, and purity! Holy Spirit, lead us in truth!
