Psalm 124: The Meaning of Confessing that the Lord is on My Side
Verse 8:
The Lord who made heaven and earth helps us.
The poet felt that the Lord who created heaven and earth was on his side. There is no other god for the poet. The Lord confessed by the poet is not the god of gods. The Lord of the poet is not the ultimate winner in the league of competing gods. For the poet, there is only one Lord. The Lord being on their side is not only the hope of the poets but also the result of interpreting their divine experiences. This is because the poet's experiences with the Lord are not just about liberation and salvation. The poet's faith in the Lord is a faith that has been vomited out in all sorts of uncomfortable situations. To be more precise, rather than confessing his faith in the Lord himself, the poet was confessed. The poet does not have the ability to confess the Lord alone. An external force acted upon the poet. At that time, that power, the Lord, becomes the poet's ally.
