Psalm 136: Between Blind Faith and Genuine Gratitude and Praise
verse 1:
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.
The psalmist gives thanks and sings praises for the love of God present in every moment of life and in everything that happens. Nothing happens without God. Therefore, his love is eternal in time and never fails in content. Such gratitude and praise are possible in two states. One is when faith is blind and unseeing, and the other is when it is emotionally and rationally a state of genuine gratitude and praise. On the surface, these two are indistinguishable. The one giving thanks and praise does not know exactly what state they are in. This is because a person caught in blind faith will never admit that their gratitude and praise stem from their faith being blind. The surface of blind faith and genuine gratitude and praise is the same. All we can do is step back and hope, like the psalmist in Psalm 19, that 'the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord.'
