Psalm 141: Deliver Us from Evil

Verse 4:

"Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies."

David is now struggling to not be swept away by the fierce waves of evil, clinging to a branch stretching out from the riverbank. David knows that he cannot escape from that river by his strength. His swimming skills and strength can't beat the water that hits his body and flows relentlessly. Instead of asking for physical strength in verse 2, he simply asks to be delivered from evil. David's prayer resembles the prayer Jesus taught us. 'Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil.' 'Deliver us from evil.' If God is with me, if God responds to my prayer, I overcome evil. If this happens several times, God disappears, and only my victory over evil remains. However, the attitude that 'I cannot overcome evil,' in other words, 'do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil,' is important. Jesus taught us to pray, 'deliver us from evil.'
