Ezra Chapter 6: The Character of Those Who Love God
Do not interfere with the work on this temple of God. Let the governor of Judah and the elders of the Jews rebuild this temple of God on its site. Moreover, I hereby issue a decree concerning what you are to do for these elders of the Jews in the construction of this temple of God: The full cost is to be paid to these people from the royal treasury out of the revenues of Trans-Euphrates, so that the work will not stop. Whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, male lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, and wheat, salt, wine and olive oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem—must be given them daily without fail, so that they may offer sacrifices pleasing to the God of heaven and pray for the well-being of the king and his sons.
♢ The temple was completed in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius. After returning in 537 B.C. and laying the foundation the following year, it took about 20 years to finish in 515 B.C. Despite many adversities, such as interference from idol-worshipping locals, and accusations from envious officials which led to work stoppages, the temple for God was completed. God thwarted the troublemakers and even used their opposition to strengthen the construction of the temple. Their accusations prompted the king to move and provide financial support for the temple building.
Paul said in Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
Those who love God work together for good. They compromise, sacrifice, strive, and dedicate themselves to fulfill God's will. By combining their modest strengths, they encourage and give courage to each other, overcoming difficulties, obstructions, and challenges. They cooperate for the sake of God's good will because of their love for God, not for their own sake.
There were indeed many obstructions during the rebuilding of the temple. It was enough to cause disappointment, despair, frustration, and the urge to give up. However, the prophets prophesied, taught, and encouraged through the word. And the elders and the people obeyed that word and built the temple with all their strength and loyalty. God made the construction of the temple successful through the cooperation of all these people.
God's good work is not accomplished by the strength of any one individual. It is brought to fruition through the grace of God, working with our small sacrifices, service, patience, efforts, and dedication. There is no need to rely on anyone else. There is no need to wait for someone else to take the lead. I can be the first to pray, to read the word, to worship, to sacrifice, to serve, to dedicate. When I create another "me" to cooperate for the sake of God's good will, God will be there with us and show us what prosperity is. By God's grace, our weaknesses will be covered, and God's power will be revealed to the world.
♧ God, please keep me from complaining about my current situation! Help me to cooperate with my brothers and sisters who love You to accomplish Your good work! Let me start with small acts of service and dedication! Holy Spirit, lead me in truth!
