Nehemiah Chapter 3: Unity Among Brothers = Joy to God

Verses 1-3:
At that time, the high priest Eliashib and his fellow priests rose up and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and set its doors in place, building as far as the Tower of the Hundred and the Tower of Hananel. The men of Jericho built the adjoining section, and next to them Zaccur son of Imri built. The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah; they laid its beams and put its doors, bolts, and bars in place.

Verses 31-32:
Next to him, Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, repaired the section from the place opposite the Nethinim and the merchants, up to the Corner Gate, and as far as the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and merchants did the repairs.

◇ Nehemiah returned and secretly inspected the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down. When he set out to rebuild the walls quickly, the news reached his enemies, who mocked Nehemiah and the people of Israel (2:11-20).

Despite their mockery, Nehemiah began the reconstruction of the wall. The work was organized into 31 sections: 8 to the north, 10 to the west, 2 to the south, and 21 to the east. Many families and individuals cooperated to progress the work smoothly and simultaneously. Additionally, 10 new gates were constructed.

The wall's completion was not the work of Nehemiah alone. Although he came with letters of support from the Persian king, he faced much ridicule and hindrance. Yet, he was confident in God's good hand aiding him and that his work was for the Lord. He did not hesitate. He encouraged the elders and people to join the effort, and through many people's cooperation, the walls and gates were rebuilt.

God's work is not done by one capable individual alone. It is accomplished by the faithful, uniting in cooperation. God's presence is with them in this collaboration. As Psalm 133:1 says,

"How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!"

When brothers and sisters in faith work together to fulfill God's purpose, it reveals the beauty of the community.

O God, there are many difficulties, divisions, and conflicts within the community. Help us realize that such things do not please you. Enable us to cooperate and build a beautiful community for you. Let us be a community that brings joy to you by living together in unity! Holy Spirit, lead us in truth!
