Appointment of Officials (Nehemiah 7:1-3)
Nehemiah 7:1-3
Appointment of Officials
1. After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, the musicians and the Levites were appointed.
2. I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do.
3. I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the guards are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses.”
◇ After completing the rebuilding of the wall, Nehemiah appointed people to guard it. This was necessary because those who had been obstructing the work from the start did not cease their hindrance. What kind of rebuilt wall was it? How much blood and sweat of many people were embedded in that wall?
One cannot simply rejoice and be merry upon completion. It's not all about celebrating. Vigilant watchmen must be appointed to properly protect against enemies.
There's a saying, "Personnel is policy." This phrase emphasizes how critical the appointment of people is to the success or failure of an endeavor. Whether it's a company, government, or church, who is appointed can determine the peace or chaos of that community. We all know this well, yet appointing people is a truly challenging task. There are countless instances where poor appointments have led to disgrace, chaos, and the collapse of communities.
♧ Lord, please appoint people who will build a fragrant church in health. Appoint those who will spread Your love and establish justice. Holy Spirit, lead us in truth. Amen.
