1 John 5: Sin That Leads to Death

1 John 5
Sin That Leads to Death

16. If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that.

◇ John distinguishes between two types of sin: sin that leads to death and sin that does not lead to death. John does not encourage us to pray for those who commit sin that leads to death. What is this sin that leads to death, and why does John speak so strongly against it?

When we think of sin that leads to death, Jesus' words in Matthew 12:31 come to mind, where he says that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the sin that leads to death, a sin that cannot be forgiven and thus prevents salvation. The term "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" was used by Jesus to refer to the Pharisees. Jesus healed a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute. Upon witnessing this, the Pharisees accused Jesus of driving out demons by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons. Jesus responded by saying that such blasphemy against the Holy Spirit would not be forgiven. Therefore, opposing the work of the Holy Spirit is a sin that leads to death.

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit involves:
1) Attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to the power of Satan.
2) Deliberately and consciously rejecting and turning away from God's will, even when knowing what it is (Numbers 15:30, Hebrews 6:4-6, 10:26-32, 1 John 5:16).
3) Persistently and stubbornly rejecting the convicting and guiding power of the Holy Spirit.

Ultimately, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is rejecting God and leading others to reject God. It is only natural that those who reject God are on the path to death.

So, am I rejecting God (his will)? Am I, while claiming to fear and obey God, falling into legalism like the Pharisees and neglecting justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23)? Am I, like the Pharisees who plotted to kill Jesus, opposing the work of the Holy Spirit?

♧ Lord, as I reflect on the works you did 2000 years ago, help me to consider what you would do if you came today. Let me be someone who cooperates with your work rather than obstructs it! Holy Spirit, lead me into truth! Amen.
