Psalm 9: God Who Hears the Cry

Psalm 9
God Who Hears the Cry

1. I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
2. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
3. My enemies turn back; they stumble and perish before you.
8. He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity.
9. The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
10. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.
18. But God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish.

◇ David offers thanks and praise to the Lord. He proclaims the wonderful deeds the Lord has done for him. Among these wonderful deeds is the defeat and destruction of David’s enemies who sought to harm and kill him without cause. David praises God as a righteous judge who remembers those who shed blood and does not forget the cries of the poor.

God is a fortress and refuge for those who cry out in their suffering. The wicked, who cause bloodshed, will fall into the pits they have dug and be caught in the nets they have hidden. This is because the righteous God will not forget to judge them.

Even in the early hours of the morning, I find comfort in David’s psalm. I am reminded once again of who God is. Like David, I confess and entrust to the Lord the injustices that weigh heavily on my heart, knowing that He remembers and will resolve my grievances. I will leave judgment to the Lord, as if placing burning coals on the heads of my enemies, and I will strive to obey His word (Deuteronomy 32:35; Romans 12:19-20).

♧ Father who hears the cries of the innocent, do not forget the many lives suffering in fear and pain today. Be their refuge and stronghold. Just as you received David’s praise, receive their praise as well. Resolve their injustices. Holy Spirit, lead them in truth. Amen.
