Psalm 18: God is my 0 0
Psalm 18
God is my 0 0
1. I love you, Lord, my strength.
2. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
◇ Psalm 18 is said to be a collection of several psalms. It consists of a song of thanksgiving, a song of praise to God, and two royal psalms, and is composed with three intentions. First, to describe God's help in times of distress; second, to remember God's powerful presence during creation with thunder, lightning, and heavy rain; and third, for the saved person to express awareness of their new life (Zuerich Bible Commentary).
Due to its complex composition, Psalm 18 might not be immediately comprehensible. While reading Psalm 18, verse 2 particularly stood out. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, my God, my rock, my shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold! This is the psalmist's confession about who God is.
Today, the word "my" catches my eye in this confession. Previously, expressions like rock, fortress, rock, shield, and horn of salvation were metaphorical descriptions of what God is like. It seems that before, I was looking for a God who met my needs. A God like a shield in my situation, a God like a fortress, a God like a rock... I think I only saw a God who met my needs. I believed, thinking, "I wish this kind of God were my God. This kind of God is my God."
Today, the reason why the word "my" catches my eye is because it raises the question: Is the God the psalmist confesses today my God? Or is he still someone else's God?
This morning, I think deeply about it.
What kind of God is my God? Not the God that the psalmist David confesses, but what kind of God is "my" God?
♧ God is my spring water. He is the spring water that refreshingly quenches my thirst. He is the lamp that lights up the darkness to show the way. Holy Spirit, lead me in truth! Amen.
