Psalm 26: The One Who Is Our Strength and Power

Psalm 26
The One Who Is Our Strength and Power

1. Vindicate me, Lord, for I have led a blameless life; I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered.
2. Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind;
12. My feet stand on level ground; in the great congregation I will praise the Lord.

David portrays God as the judge, himself as the defendant, and his adversaries as the accusers. He views the hardship of being accused as a test. David strongly asserts his innocence, stating that he has not sat with deceitful people or associated with hypocrites, as he is one who stands before the Lord. He confesses his love for the house where God dwells and the place where his glory resides. Therefore, he pleads not to be swept away with sinners or his life taken with those who are bloodthirsty.

David appeals against what he sees as unjust accusations. Through these unfair charges, David prays for God to examine and test him, to refine his conscience and intentions (verse 2). David uses this hardship as an opportunity for self-improvement. Though feeling wronged and angry, he strives to maintain composure. Could this be because he believes in and loves God, who is the ruler of the world, just, merciful, and gracious? Is it because he knows who God is that he can endure and use this as a chance for self-improvement?

A clear and accurate confession of who God is becomes our strength. It's the power that helps us overcome hardships, endure, and fight against injustice. Finally, David expresses gratitude for standing on level ground and praises God.

Prayer: God, help us to believe in and obey your love, justice, and fairness today. In any moment or situation, enable us to confess you rightly and overcome! Holy Spirit, guide us in truth. Amen.
