1 Thessalonians 3: The Mission of the Gospel Worker

1 Thessalonians 3:
The Mission of the Gospel Worker

8. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.
9. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?

What is the greatest joy for someone who shares the gospel?

It’s seeing believers who, after hearing the message, remain steadfast in their faith no matter the circumstances. They continue to hold firm, loving one another, and living with the hope of Christ’s return and resurrection (vv. 10-13).

This is why Paul and his companions didn’t simply throw out the gospel and walk away as though their task was done. Instead, they remained engaged, praying, staying in contact, and shepherding from a distance.

Confessing Jesus as Lord and living as His disciple was as challenging 2,000 years ago as it is today. The pressures of life, the influence of people, and the shifting currents of the world can cause us to lose sight of the faith, love, and hope that are foundational to being a disciple of Christ. They can tempt us to abandon these things, or to drift away from them.

Paul makes it clear what the mission of the gospel worker is:
"We sent Timothy... to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. For you know quite well that we are destined for them" (vv. 2-3).

As I reflect on Paul’s example and his unwavering commitment to his calling, I am challenged to consider how faithfully and diligently I’m carrying out my own responsibility as a gospel worker.

♧ Gracious God, help me to be as faithful and diligent in my calling as Paul and his companions were. Holy Spirit, lead me in truth. Amen.
