2 Timothy 2:1-13 : Entrust to Faithful People

2 Timothy 2:1-13
Entrust to the Faithful

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.

"The Student Surpasses the Master"
There's a beautiful old saying that speaks of indigo dye: "The blue from the indigo plant becomes deeper than the plant itself." This wisdom is often applied to the relationship between teacher and student, describing how a disciple can grow to surpass their mentor.
A teacher must nurture their disciples. Without raising up the next generation, the stream of knowledge runs dry. What greater joy can there be than seeing a disciple flourish and carry forward the torch of wisdom?
When we meet elderly people, they often proudly share stories about their children. Parents experience their greatest joy and happiness when speaking of their children's accomplishments. Isn't this the greatest pride and joy for both teachers and parents – seeing those we've nurtured and taught growing into capable individuals who fulfill their calling in life?
Paul exhorts Timothy to become both a parent and teacher in faith. He commands him to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus and to teach faithful people who will, in turn, teach others. This creates a beautiful chain of discipleship.
Paul endures all hardships and suffering in spreading the Gospel "so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory." Paul deeply desires his beloved disciple Timothy to continue this work and to raise up others who will carry it forward. From Paul to Timothy, and from Timothy to others – this is how the Gospel flows from generation to generation.
Can you imagine Paul's joy as he wrote this letter to Timothy? May we become people worthy of writing such letters ourselves.

Prayer: Gracious God, make us Your faithful soldiers who, like the deepening blue of indigo, grow ever stronger in faith and pass on Your Gospel to future generations. Holy Spirit, guide us in Your truth. Amen.
