Amos 5:18-27 (#2) : Justice Rolling Like Waters

Amos 5:18-27 (#2) : Justice Rolling Like Waters

"But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream."

In the latter part of Chapter 5, Amos pronounces judgment once more. He speaks to the people of Northern Israel who long for the Day of the Lord, revealing that this day is not a moment of triumph, but a day of darkness without light—a pitch-black moment of reckoning.

Northern Israel was intoxicated by illusions. They believed that when the Lord came as King, He would grant them complete victory. They mistook their economic prosperity as divine confirmation of their righteousness. With zealous passion, they sought sanctuaries in every direction, offering sacrifices, convinced that God would be pleased and grant them victory on the Day of the Lord.

However, Amos proclaims that the day they anticipate as a victory celebration is actually a day of judgment, a day of impenetrable darkness. God will not accept their burnt offerings or grain offerings. He will not receive their fat peace sacrifices. For forty years in the wilderness, God did not accept sacrificial offerings. Through Amos, God declares He does not desire these sacrifices.

Amos urgently calls: "Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream." What God truly desires from Northern Israel is justice and righteousness, not empty religious performances.

If they continue their hollow religious rituals, they will be carried away—far, far away. Beyond Damascus, they will be exiled. This is the word of the Lord. This is the darkness that will descend upon them on the Day of the Lord.

Prayer:
O God of love and justice, examine my heart. Am I engaging in mere performative religious acts? Transform me from one who practices religion for personal gain to one who channels the justice and righteousness You desire. Make me an instrument of mercy and compassion. Help me radiate the fragrance of Christ. Holy Spirit, guide me in truth. Amen.
