Joshua 10:29-43: God Fights For Us (#2)
Joshua 10:29-43: God Fights For Us (#2)
"42 So Joshua conquered all these kings and their lands in one campaign, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel."
♢ After defeating the five kings who had united against Israel, Joshua quickly seized key Philistine cities. He systematically captured city-states southwest of the Jordan River: Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir, one after another.
The Israelites, armed with bronze weapons, swiftly overcame the Canaanite natives who possessed superior iron weapons. The difference between bronze and iron is as significant as the difference between a bow and arrow and a modern rifle. The fact that the Israelites, with their bronze weapons, decisively defeated the Canaanites wielding iron, is remarkable.
How did this victory happen? Joshua concludes chapter 10 by stating, "The LORD God of Israel fought for Israel; so Joshua took all these kings and their land in one sweep."
This triumph was not due to Joshua's or Israel's prowess. It wasn't a result of superior weaponry or tactics. It was because the LORD God fought on their behalf. When they stepped forward boldly, without fear, God was with them, fighting their battles. Bronze weapons, iron weapons, military strategy, the number of soldiers – these weren't the decisive factors. What mattered was their unwavering faith in the LORD God as they moved forward, and God fought for them and granted them victory.
Let's not be paralyzed by our own abilities, our possessions, or our perceived shortcomings and weaknesses. What we should worry about is not our limitations. What we should be concerned about is whether we are aligned with God's will. Are we staying true to God's purpose, not veering to the left or the right? If we are living in accordance with God's will, then we must not be afraid to move forward. Let us advance with courage and strength. The Lord will be with us. He will work on our behalf.
♧ Good and faithful God, help us to discern if we are aligned with Your will at all times, and guide us to live in accordance with that will. Holy Spirit, empower us with strength and courage. Amen.
