Luke 10:1-24 Two by Two
v. 1. After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go.
◇ After sending out the twelve disciples (9:1), this time Jesus sends out 70 disciples in pairs.
The reason for sending them two by two is said to be for the sake of witness testimony (Numbers 17:6; 19:15). It's for the effectiveness of their testimony. I believe this shows Jesus's thoughtfulness toward his disciples. Having a partner is truly reassuring. Especially when going to unfamiliar places, traveling with a companion feels more secure than going alone.
The Lord gives us fellow workers. And He sends us as someone else's fellow worker. Those who serve together in the church, where Christ is the head, are our fellow workers. They encourage and comfort each other, carrying out the Lord's work and pressing on toward the goal together.
We have an even more dependable fellow worker, protector, and guide. It's the Holy Spirit! The One who makes us aware of our sins, reveals Jesus to us, and becomes our strength and power—the Holy Spirit is with us.
♧ Lord, who understands us, thank You for knowing our fears, anxieties, and worries, and for sending us fellow workers and the Holy Spirit. Help us to combine our strength with our fellow workers and follow You boldly and courageously according to the Holy Spirit's guidance. Amen.
