Luke 20:45-47 Beware
45. While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,
46. "Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
47. They devour widows' fortunes and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely."
Jesus warned his disciples to "beware" of the teachers of the law. This means to be cautious and vigilant about them.
The teachers of the law that Jesus cautioned against were those who outwardly appeared pious, but in reality were boastful of their authority and status, even to the point of exploiting the possessions of the poor. They were more concerned with maintaining appearances than truly studying the law. Jesus declared that they would receive a stern judgment.
Even today, there are many people like them - those who seem devout on the outside, but are only pursuing power and personal gain. We must be wary of them and take care not to be led astray by their influence.
Gracious and righteous God, help us to humbly fulfill our duties and live truthfully. Grant us the wisdom to discern the hypocrites, and give us the strength and courage of the Holy Spirit, so that we may not fall under their sway. Amen.
