Revelation 7: A Great Multitude Beyond Number
3. "Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God."
4. Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel.
9. After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.
14. I answered, "Sir, you know." And he said, "These are they who come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."
◇ This is an interlude that appears after six of the seven seals have been broken, before the seventh and final seal is opened. The number mentioned in this interlude is perhaps the most famous number in all of Revelation: "144,000." This figure has been seized upon and sensationalized by countless doomsday prophets and false teachers throughout history.
First, we must understand that 144,000 is simply a symbolic number. It represents God's servants whom He will protect from the persecution of the world—nothing more, nothing less. It's 12,000 from each of Israel's 12 tribes, totaling 144,000—a symbolic representation of a great multitude.
From verse 9 onward, we encounter an even greater number of the redeemed. These are the ones who have overcome suffering, clothed in white robes, holding palm branches in their hands, worshiping the Lord on His throne. The phrase "from every nation, tribe, people and language" signifies people from all corners of the earth. Beyond the great multitude chosen from Israel's 12 tribes, there are countless more—the Gentiles who have received salvation.
God's salvation is not limited to a fixed number (144,000), nor is it restricted to the nation of Israel alone. Countless people from every nation receive salvation, regardless of their ethnic background.
Those clothed in white robes are the ones who have been washed in the blood of the Lamb (verse 14). These who have laundered their garments in the Lamb's blood are those who have lived out discipleship in all its varied forms. They are the ones who have overcome tribulation through their commitment to following Christ.
The Lamb will become their shepherd, leading them to springs of living water and wiping away every tear from their eyes (verse 17).
