2 Chronicles 19: For the Lord

"He told them, 'Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for mere mortals but for the Lord, who is with you whenever you give a verdict.'" (v. 6)

◇ The story of King Jehoshaphat is remarkably extensive, spanning five full chapters from 17 to 20. Following in his father Asa's footsteps, he was zealous in serving the Lord. He cut down idols and, most notably, sent priests, prophets, and Levites throughout the provinces to teach the law, instruct in God's decrees, and administer fair justice. He was truly a good king—good in God's sight and beneficial to his people.

They say everyone has skeletons in their closet, and I suppose I have my fair share. Even this good king Jehoshaphat had his flaws: he formed an alliance with King Ahab of the northern kingdom of Israel through marriage (chapter 18). Jehoshaphat probably didn't realize in his lifetime what tragic consequences this would bring. We need wisdom to discern whether what appears advantageous today is truly beneficial, and whether what seems like a loss today is genuinely harmful.

What's fortunate, however, is that at the very center of Jehoshaphat's heart, the Lord always dwelt. Before being drawn into war by Ahab's persuasion, he wanted to first inquire of the prophets whether it was God's will. He was willing to listen not only to prophets who told the king what he wanted to hear, but also to those who spoke uncomfortable truths. Because Jehoshaphat was this kind of man, though King Ahab died in that battle, God preserved his life.

Jehoshaphat urged those in positions of power to consider deeply whether they were judging for human purposes or for the Lord. To judge for human purposes means to judge corruptly—taking bribes, serving not all people but only the wealthy and powerful. But to judge for the Lord is to judge fairly. This is what truly serves people—not just certain individuals, but everyone.

Everyone can make mistakes and have flaws. But those who carry God at the center of their hearts make decisions for God and live accordingly. This is because God guides them to do so.

♧ Good and righteous God, help me carry You within and live rightly and justly. Help me live for You and for all people. Holy Spirit, make me strong and courageous. Amen.
